Plan a ‘You Have the Power’ diabetes field day at school

57 million people in the United States have pre-diabetes. Many of them are young people just like you--two million adolescents between 12 and 19 years old have pre-diabetes.

What does this mean? Pre-diabetes is when your blood sugar is higher than normal and can lead to type 2 diabetes but is not yet at the level of diabetes. Tons of young people are at high-risk of diabetes and don’t even know it!

Luckily, you have the power! You can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes by eating better and getting some hearty exercise. You can host a field day at your school!

The day
Field days are lots of fun and your school probably already provides them. All you have to do is ask if you can give the field day a purpose! Talk to your principle and school administrators about tweaking it a bit to make the theme about diabetes awareness and prevention. Try the name “you have the power” or get creative and come with your own.

The theme
Tons of young people are at high-risk of type-2 diabetes and don’t even know it! When you are at high-risk of diabetes, doctors call it “pre-diabetes.” Pre-diabetes means ones blood sugar is higher than normal and can lead to type 2 diabetes but is not yet at the level of diabetes.

The Statistics
Make sure your community and school knows about the statistics first! Create a flier or posters to put up near the field to highlight that 2 million kids have pre-diabetes conditions! This will help you get support for the field day, and you can hand the fliers out on the big day too.

Get the OK
Next step is secure a time and a place. Again, you’re going to want to go to your school officials first and find out what day is OK to take over the fields. Timing is important especially if your event is going to be outside. Make sure to pick a day with good weather!

Educate yourself
Now that you’ve gotten permission, make sure you know the facts so you can give your field day a purpose! For example, did you know that 57 million people in the United States have pre-diabetes? Many of them are young people just like you--two million adolescents aged 12-19 have pre-diabetes.

The game plan
OK so now you’ve done all of the dirty work, time to have some fun and get creative! Come up with events for the day--games like two legged race, wheel-barrel, and egg race are all fun. Each one can have a theme if you’d like—use the stats to make cool names for your games!

The snacks
You’re going to want to think about food if you are planning a day event. Offer healthy snacks throughout the day. And offer info on how to eat right to keep in shape. One way to do this is put info with each snack about what nutritious elements are in it, what they do for your body, and how much you should be getting per day!

Spread the word
Break out your markers, print out some photos, it’s time to get the word out! Variety is the key so make sure to mix it up with small fliers to pass out, informative fliers to post, and big colorful posters. Remember to include the time, place, and the events!

The Goal
At the end of the day hopefully everyone has learned a little something about how to stay healthy. They will know that they have the power to reverse pre-diabetes by changing their eating and exercising habits. If you have a successful day, try fundraising the next year for diabetes research! You can fundraise before the game by having each team get sponsors to donate for each game they win!
