Perform a Sugar Intake Experiment

The American Heart Association suggests the maximum sugar intake for adult women be 5 teaspoons (20 grams) of sugar per day, for adult men, 9 teaspoons (36 grams) daily, and for children, 3 teaspoons (12 grams) a day. Do you know what these quantities really look like? Do you know how much sugar you consume?

Do a Demonstration
With your friends or family, come up with a fact list you can share.

  • Grab a big old bag of sugar and a set of measuring spoons.

  • First, fill a three clear plastic cups with the amount of sugar recommended for men, women, and children.

  • Label them.

  • Look up the sugar content in a serving of your favorite foods and beverages.

  • For each food or drink, label a clear plastic cup with the product's name.
  • Fill the cup with the amount of sugar in that product.

  • Now let your audience play with your display and see how the amount of sugar they consume compares with the recommended amount.

  • Record your Results
Write down what people find. For example, how many cans of your favorite soda does it take to max out on sugar? How much more sugar does someone consume compared to what is recommended?

    Create a Display
Turn your findings into a pamphlet that you can share! Snap some pictures of the display project to get others intereested. Now that you know what's up with sugar and health, continue the demonstration other places in order to spread the word.
